The 1950s
In the early 1950s, more faculty members of the Speech department began to take an interest in the Roister Doisters. Henry B. Pierce became technical director and Miss Doris Abramson (a former member of the group), took over as director. Miss Abramson directed such well known plays as "The Crucible", "Tiger at the Gates", and "Volpone" during this decade. In 1955, Bowker Auditorium was also renovated and redecorated. Cushioned seats were added and the stage was expanded, much to the delight of the various theater organizations that performed there. Both the Roister Doisters and the Operetta Guild performed regularly in the facility, the latter presenting University President, John Paul Mather with an honorary membership during their 1957 production of "Paint Your Wagon". |
