Written by Tom Stoppard
"Arcadia follows two stories of those who find their lives unfolding in the somber English countryside of Sidley Park, separated by a passage of 200 years, but deeply connected in the efforts of those driven to discovery.
In 1809, 13 year old Thomasina Coverly searches for truth in math, sciences, and carnal knowledge from her tutor Septimus Hodge. As the occupants of the house navigate a change to both the park landscape and social dynamics of the classical-romantic period, Thomasina grows ever closer to a discovery that would redefine the natural world as we understand it.
In the present, two academics, Hannah Jarvis and Bernard Nightingale, collaborate and compete to prove theories about the park’s occupants of 200 years ago. Hannah searches for the identity of the ‘Sidley Park Hermit’, a guest the park with little notation in the pages of history supposedly to have been a scientific genius, while Bernard attempts to prove the poet Lord Byron was not only an occupant of the house, but a duelist shot and killed a competing poet Ezra Chater over the love of Ezra’s wife.
As the lines blur between truth and emotion, love and obsession, discovery and understanding, Stoppard’s supreme play of ideas emphasizes that in trying to grasp the human experience, 'It’s wanting to know that makes us matter".'
